A walk through A little community was established between the 7th and the 9th century on the shores of the Zwin. The first inhabitants who sought shelter there called it Bryggia. The town develop around the fortress called Burg (Borough) that the Counts of Flandres hat built there. The town soon became an important trade centre, thanks to its communication with the sea. Bruges became so important that the Counts of Flandres settled there. In the 13th century Burges becames a world port. Bruges was to regain its magnificence because the Dukes of Burgundy set up their residence there. Bruges developed in an splendid town and became an unequated artistic centre. Its ancient architecture brought priceless elements to the European artistic patrimony. The Belfry and the Halles were build around 1240. The Judges of the town used to meet there. A staircase of 336 steps leads the visitor to the top of the 83 m. high tower, from where one can enjoy a panoramic view of the Flemish countryside. VisszaTémakörök
