The largest complex of its kind in Western Europe, the Barbican Centre for Arts and Conferences was opened in March 1982. The Centre provides the City of London with a wealth of new facilities in an exciting setting. Within its walls can be found the Barbican Hall, seating 2,026; two theatres, one seating 1,166 and the other, a studio theatre called The Pit, up to 240; an art gallery; a public cinema; a lending library (including children's and music libraries) with nearly 100,000 books; two restaurants; two trade exhibition halls; smaller conference rooms and attractive private function areas.
The Centre is the home of the London Symphony Orchestra and the London base of the Royal Shakespeare Company. In addition to providing top-quality performances, they both have close links with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, which is an integral part of the Centre.
