The Baker Perkins engineering empire has grown from two separate sterns. On the Baker side, the story begins modestly with the manufacture of a simple piece of kitchen equipment—a flour sifter. From Canada, the Bakers brought it to Britain, sold it widely, then set up in London to manufacture machinery for making bread, biscuits, sweets and chocolates. The founder on the Perkins side was a versatile American inventor named Jacob Perkins, who settled in London in 1819. Today, the Baker Perkins factories in the United Kingdom and overseas are still making machinery that caters for basic human needs; in recent years the range of products has greatly widened and now includes the manufacture of web-fed offset printing machinery.
