This volume presents the loveliest and most remarkable objects in six of Budapest's museums. Outstanding examples of Hungárián national culture include a number of masterpieces of universal art. The National Museum, the first public collec- . tion in the country, was founded in 1802, and contains relics of Hungárián history ranging from finds dating from the time of the Migration Period, as well as the Hungárián coronation regatta, to garments of well-known historical personalities, many of whom are significant in terms of art history. The country's largest museum, and the one most widely known abroad, is the Museum of Fine Árts, in which are housed select pieces of universal art. Alongside relics of ancient Egyptian and classical Greek art, it contains works by nearly all the great figures of European art, including Giorgione, Raphael, Dürer, Bruegel, Rembrandt, Goya and Monet. The Hungárián National Gallery collects and displays masterpieces of Hungárián painting, I sculpture and graphic art. Besides Gothic altarpieces and old panel paintings, its holdings include works by noted Hungárián painters such as Mihály Munkácsy, József Rippl-Rónai and Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, who are alsó known internationally. The Museum of Applied Arts houses an extremely varied material of ancient icons, porcelain, glass, leather and goldsmith's works; its collection of old tapestries and Art Nouveau glassware are of international renown. The Ethnographical Museum conserves beautiful objects from the history of Hungárián folkart: glossy pottery, finely executed carvings and colourful national costumes, side by side with a valuable collection of folk-art from all parts of the world. The Budapest Historical Museum preserves the most beautiful antiquities of the capital. It alsó displays the sculptures from the Angevin period which once adorned the Royal Palace, and which, when they were found a few years ago, caused great interest among scholars dealing with European Gothic art. Besides the historical artefacts, the exhibits include the utensils of daily life and rare photographs from the end of the last century. The volume gives a short history of the museums, and provides illustrations of the most valuable objects in colour and black-and-white reproductions with descriptions. Vissza
