/ Overview ofthe Migration Systems in the CIS Countries As a consequence of the recent Enlargement of the EU, the focus of attention has increasingly shifted towards the Eastern external bordér of the Union and the neighbouring region ofthe Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The irregular movement of migrants within, from and through the CIS region is on a steady rise and it can be foreseen that this trend will intensify in the future. A substantial part of these migrants have interalia Europe as their ultimate destination. The present report has been elaborated to contribute to an enlarged knowledge base concerning the actual migration situation, the existing legal and institutional framework and the character of migration flows in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
