THE CONFIDENTIAL PAPERS OF ADMIRAL HORTHY This volume has been compiled of still extant priváté papers of Admiral Horthy, former Regent of Hungary. Altogether sixty-five documents have been selected from the legacy now deposited in nine files at the National Record Office, revealing the foreign and domestic policy of the counter-revolutionary era 1919-1944. The first paper is dated June 29th, 1919, the last July i7th, 1944. Among the addressees and writers of the letters figure ex-Emperor and King Charles IV of Hapsburg; Marshal Ludendorff, Chief-of-Staff of the Germán Army in the First World War; Hitler; Mussolini; Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, President of the Czechoslovak Republic; Ribberitrop, Foreign Minister of nazi Germany; Marshal Pilsudski of Poland; Neville Chamberlain; the newspaper magnate Viscount Rothermere, and many others. These letters, further the correspondence between Horthy and leading Hungárián politicians, such as prime ministers Count István Bethlen, Gyula Gömbös, Count Pál Teleki, Miklós Kállay, throw a light on many an event of Hungárián history between the two World Wars, ihitherto unknown or only
inadequately known, and represent Hungárián counter-revolution and fascism in their historic reality. Still, over and above a survey of this historic era of Hungary, the volume alsó supplies factual data and a body of knowledge indispensable for those taking an interest in the history of Central and Eastern Europe in the twentieth century, and within this framework, of the origins and growth of fascism. The study of this edition of sources is made easier by the critical apparatus which enables both the histórián and the reader interested in history to become acquainted, with adequate accuracy, with the textual and formai aspects of the documenüs and the origin and development of the questions raised in them. The Appendix contains among others a complete list of the papers left behind by the former Regent, further the letters in Germán and Italian reprinted in the originál language. CORVINA PRESS Vissza
