Let no one assume from the title of this book that it is 'the mixture as before'. Readers will look in vain for Words-worth's daffodils, views of Windsor Castle, or solemn appraisals of the British way of life. This is a highly personal book.
It is a long time since an anthology on a popular subject brought together so much fresh and delightfully unusual material. From the seventeenth-century mystical poet Quarles (on bowls!) to Dylan Thomas (on Bank Holidays) the poetic background of the British scene is presentéd with a rare feeling for new vistas and unfamiliar detail.
The choice of illustrations, which rangé from a fifteenth-century wood-carving in a Suffolk pub to an industrial Street scene by L. S. Lowry, shows the same lively disregard for conventional taste. Although they include superb and important works of British art, they have been gathered from such varied sources that most of them will be quite new to the majority of readers.
