The provision of a system of universal health insurance is an issue which has bedevilled Australian politics for 40 years. There is a long history of dispute and controversy over the questions of whether the Federal government or the medical profession itself is the best arbiter of the public interest in health care, and to what extent governments have the right to control the independence of doctors.
A Brutal Game examines the experiences of public patients who became the victims of the most recent outcome of this ongoing dispute — the medical speciahsts' strike of 1984-85. Stuart Rees, a social work academic of growing reputation, has focused his research and writing largely upon the evaluation of consumer experiences of health, welfare and legal services in contrast to accounts advanced by professionals, bureaucrats and politicians.
