George Washington looked to
the creation of a national capital
as the greatest hope for holding together
the fragile union of states under the
newly conceived American Constitution. With architect Pierre L'Enfant,
who envisioned a capital city 'magnificent enough to grace a great nation' and
surveyor Andrew Ellicott, he personally
helped select sites for a Capitol building, the presidents home, and government buildings within the ten-mile-square Federal District along the
Potomac River.
Today, Washington, D.C., stands as a
centerpiece of national unity. Its majestic memorials, edifices, statues, commemorative parks, and other heroic
symbols represent the national past and
with it the ideals of a great democracy
This is the story of the creation of the
United States capital. For nearly two
centuries, citizens have come to Washington to admire its many sights, and to
feel, deep inside, that all its beauty and
grandeur, all its historical meaning,
belong to them.
