Already described in the USA over 20 years ago was a condition referred to as "panic disorder", which has meanwhile become recognised as constituting a high-ly spécifié category within the group of anxiety disorders. Among its typical features are at-tacks of panic which strike like a boit from the blue and not infre-quently occur either at night or in the early hours of the morning. It is a disease entity whose preva-lence appears to be higher than is generally assumed. In countries other than the USA, psychiatrists are also now aware of the prob-lem, but among non-psychiatrists working in everyday practice such awareness still seems to be generally lacking.
This pocket-book, which reflects experience acquired with panic disorder in the course of the years, is primarily intended as a source of information for the general practitioner.
