In this book, published to coincide with the tenth anniversary of 7:84, McGrath looks at the different ways different classes take their entertainment. Then, after going back to Brecht and Piscator and other purveyors of political theatre in the twenties and thirties, he looks to his contemporaries and to 7:84 itself, in order to reach a definition of truly popular working-class theatre.
The result is a polemical manifesto pointing towards what theatre could be doing, instead of walling itself up in subsidised fortresses for the well-to-do.
