A History of Medieval Europe
Maurice Keen has written a valuable introduction to the period we know as the Middle Ages, designed especially with the non-specialist in mind. It describes what happened in Europe in that period, and gives an account of the contemporary social and cultural background which helps the reader to understand why things happened the way they did.
The theme which is followed throughout is the political and cultural unity of western Europe as a Christian society in the centuries which divide the age of Charlemagne from the eve of the Renaissance. Mr Keen shows how western Europe came to resemble a Christian confederation of powers under ecclesiastical presidency, and traces the decline of clerical leadership and the rise of the secular state, as the ideal of a united Christendom ceased to be meaningful on the threshold of a new age.
