In this work Professor Kann describes, surveys, and discusses the major historical aspects of the Habsburg empire—diplomatic, political, institutional, socioeconomic, and cultural.
He places as much emphasis on the history and problems of the eleven major national groups that constituted the empire as on its over-all history. He views national issues with reference both to the major historical-political units (such as the hereditary lands and the lands of the Bohemian and Hungarian crowns) and to the ethnic units that were not politically organized.
Professor Kann thus approaches problems from the standpoint of the imperial center on issues of foreign and domestic policies as well as from that of the historic and ethnic entities. He pays particular attention to the evolution of the intellectual history of
