The history of travel dates back to the early epochs of Man. It covers the first trading ventures, the tourist traffic in ancient Romé, pilgramages, travelling scholars, strolling players, travelling journeymen, educational journeys, gentlemen on the Grand Tour, journeys in the name of the Enlightenment and Italomania, voyages of discovery and journeys to spas up to present-day tourism. Travelling is not only a qu estion of the routes and the means of transport or of the destination, but above all of the different unterlying motives. For what reason did men went on grand voyage at various epochs disregarding every danger and difficulty ? It was the thirst for knowledge and freedom, a sense of adventure, religious zeal, an eagerness to learn and to broaden one's horizons, encounters with people and with nature. The author, Dr. Winfried Löschburg, lives in Berlin. After havi ng studied histoiy and Germán languages and literature he worked for several years at the Museum for Germán History in Berlin and at the Institute for Theory and Building Design of the Germán Academy of Architecture. Since 1962 he has held a post as a librarian and art lecturer at the Germán State Library in Berlin.
