A HISTORY OF
WESTERN MUSIC
SHORTER EDITION
By DONALD JAY GROUT
This new alternative version of A History of Western Music provides a distinguished text for the shorter course in music history. It is based on the author's full-length study of the development of Western music from the close of the ancient world down through the most recent trends in atonalism and dodecaphony. None of the chapters present in the longer edition are omitted in this version, although coverage in certain areas is somewhat less detailed. The balance in the treatment of the various periods of music history is essentially the same.
Every aspect of music history is covered: all vocal and instrumental forms, notation, performance, music-printing, development of instruments, and biographical information on composers.

Every aspect of music history is covered: all vocal and instrumental forms, notation, performance, music-printing, development of instruments, and biographical information on composers.
The author treats music as an integral part of our intellectual Western heritage. He presents the subject primarily as a history of musical style, the fluctuation of which represents the essence of musical history. As a result of this method, the wonderful variety and logical continuity of musical style emerges with great clarity.
Since musical style can be fully understood only through knowledge of music itself, all examples of music analyzed and discussed in the text are easily available in recorded or printed forms.
A Histonj of Western Music, Shorter Edition, provides a text of impeccable scholarship, modern in approach, beautifully written and proportioned for the study of music history.
