In /i Map of Modern English Verse John Press, himself a poet, explores a fascinating area of literary history, large tracts of which will be unknown to all but the most industrious readers of twentieth-century poetry. He has assembled what may be called a 'source book', consisting of a general introduction to the period, followed by fourteen sections each devoted to a poet or a group of poets, starting with 'The Later Poetry of W. B. Yeats' and ending with 'The Movement and the Poets of the 1950s'. Each section contains a biographical and critical introduction, a number of critical passages, a selection of key poems, and a bibliography.

Eliot, stress the Anglo-American origins of modern English poetry, and the contributions to the art of poetry in England made by American expatriates. Of particular value will be the extracts from the many important prefaces, articles, reviews, letters, and other fugitive writings which were lying forgotten in books now out of print or in the pages of dead periodicals.
