This new approach to English pronunciation provides, alongside Professor Gimson's Introduction to the Pronunciation of English, a companion coursespecifically designedforthe learnerof English asa second orforeign language. The acquisition of new phonetic skills requires intensive and structured practice, especially in the case of the aduit learner, who has often first to recognize and eliminate incorrectly-acquired habits of pronunciation. Professor Gimson has therefore adopted a perceptual approach : the course in the first place trains the learner to distinguish between correct and incorrect sounds in English, before proceeding to develop his pronunciation skills. The course is divided into four main sections, on vowels, consonants, accentuation and rhythm, and intonation. As well as p'roviding for those studying under the guidance of a teacher and with the aid of a language laboratory, the course is designed forthe individual learner with playback facilities, and is available in learning packs of course-book plus cassette recording.
