The colony of New South Wales was founded on 26 January 1788, when the officers, marines and convicts of the First Fleet arrived on the shores of Sydney Harbour, a place long inliabited by the indigenous Eora people. Free .settlers soon followed and settlement spread across the Great Dividing Range to the west, and along the coastal plains to north and south. Today, over loin million people live in Sydney, capital of the State of New South Wales.
