Daniel Defoe's A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain is one of the most important national surveys ever carried out. It shows the country at a critical moment in its development, at the time of the Jacobite risings, just after the union with Scotland and just before the Industrial Revolution. Defoe, with his sharp eye for commercial and economic development, was uniquely qualified to observe this process.
But the Tour is also a lively and entertaining guide-book, full of anecdote, pithy comment and humour. Along with Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders, it is perhaps the greatest of the five hundred-odd works which flowed from Defoe's tireless imagination. It provides a vivid picture of a nation at once familiar and yet made strange by the passage of years.
