A Turn of the Wheel tells the story of Baruch Sammut, a young university student, whose idealistic pursuit of the lovely innage of his desire—in an obsession with a philosophy professor, an affair with a young seminarian, and a frustrating liaison with a prostitute— eventually leads him to attempt suicide. His attempt fails, and he awakens to the realisation that even this act of desperation was just another bitterly ironic turn of the wheel of his fate. Terse, intense and psychologically acute, this novel helped to establish Oliver Friggieri as one of contemporary Malta's most distinguished writers of fiction.

OLIVER FRIGGIERI is a Lecturer at the University of Malta. Novelist, poet, critic, editor, biographer, and historian of Maltese literature, he is one of the leading authors and literary scholars in contemporary Malta. A Turn of the Wheel was published in Maltese (as L-lstramb) in 1980, and in the same year Wilfion Books published Dr. Friggieri's edited anthology of post-war Maltese poetry. Cross Winds, which was well received both in Malta and the U.K.
GRAZIO FALZON, a Maltese-born Professor in the Department of Humanities at Pacific University, Forest Grove, Oregon, U.S.A., is a widely known translator of Malteáe literature into English and French.
