But the overriding sensation is that from above the city looks empty: so little moves that is discernible. All the descriptive adjectives about New York - "teeming," "bustling," "cacophonous," and so forth - are pertinent only at street level. From above they simply do not apply. - George Plimpton
After graduating from Yale University with a degree in architecture history, Paul Goldberger attained a career goal when, in 1973, he was named architecture critic of The New York Times. Sometimes controversial but always respected, he has won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism for his writings at the Times. He, his wife and three sons live in New York City. Paul Goldberger is the Author of The City Observed: New York-An Architectural Guide to Manhattan, The Skyscraper, On the Rise - Architecture and Design in the Post-Modern Age, and Houses of the Hamptons. His role, the role of all architecture critics, is to encourage us to see the world around us in new ways, to nurture our concern for the built landscape. And to that end, what comes through clearly in each of these captions is Goldberger's passionate interest in good design, whether it is found in public parks, in shopping centers or skyscrapers and in this instance only seen from above.
