When plays like lonesco's Baid Prímadonna and Beckett's Waiting fór Godot : began to be produced in the early 1950s, critics and audiences were brought face to face with a phenomenon which appeared to flout every accepted standard of the drama. Since then the 'Theatre of the Absurd' has become established as a major dramatic form, expressing something of the sense of spiritual desolation which has followed the shock of the Second World War and the shifting of religious, political, and morál foundations. This volume contains lonesco's first full-length play, Amédée, and three shorf 9 plays: Adamov's Professor Taranne, Arrabal's The Two Executioners, and Edward Albee's The Zoo Story. Martin Esslin contributes a long introduction, suggesting the movement's antecedents and showing how the development of the plays as poetic images gives them an inner realism and a rich theatrical quality.
