The transition to a market economy calls for radical accounting reform. This publication summarises the proceedings of a seminar organised by the Centre for Co-operation with the European Economies in Transition of the OECD, on accounting reforms in Central and Eastern Europe. This volume compares the major elements of accounting and reporting in both market and centrally-planned economies. It adresses the various issues that are arising as the Central and Eastern European countries make the transition to a market economy, including what is required of the legal/accounting infrastructure to facilitate this transition. The specific problems of valuation of assets and liabilities, income statements, and profit allocation which are of great importance are also covered. In addition, an appraisal of the role of the accounting profession is provided.
