Adorno Theodor W. Adorno (1903-69), the leading figure in the now celebrated Frankfurt School, was one of this century's most demanding intellectuals. His work, which was always informed by the idiosyncratic variant of Critical Theory that he called Negative Dialectics, is notoriously difficult to understand, yet it has had an impact on philosophy, sociology* musicology, literary criticism, psychology and the study of culture. Professor Jay makes Adorno's thought lucid and accessible, while remaining true to its unresolved tensions: he borrows Adorno's concept of the forcefield to characterize the competing energies that were never fully reconciled into a harmonious world-view. In addition to the Western Marxist, these include aesthetic modernist, cultural mandarin, Jewish theological and proto-deconstructionist impulses. Adorno's thought occupied the intersection at which all of these forces, among the most powerful intellectual currents of our age, came together in explosive ways.
