This important travel book, with its graphic descriptions of adventures and tribal customs, to some extent continues Colonel Lawrence's story, for it deals with many of the same people and places ten years after that narrative left off.
Seabrook, who was accepted as a Mohamedan, lived for a considerable time as an intimate among various desert tribes and had unusual opportunities of seeing the private life of the Druses—the strange fierce race of painted warriors ; the Dervishes—fanatical mystics, who believe that by dancing and self-torture they can obtain communion with God; and the Yezidees or Devil Worshippers of the mountains near Mosul, a strange secret people who worship the Serpent.
