The international association Cactus Co. is honoured to publish this book about the island of Socotra, an opportunity generously given to us by Alain Christophe.
One of the chief aims of our association is to publish books on the succulent world, which are only available to our members, at the cost of paper and printing.

Alain Christophe was born in 1960 near Paris. As a child his interest in plants was already strong, helped by the fact that the family home was surrounded by a garden, where he soon learned the art of cultivation. Exotic plants later became his chief interest, and the purchase of a hothouse containing a profusion of creepers, carnivorous plants, orchids and succulents put the stamp on his professional career. Exotic plants later became his chief interest, and the purchase of a hothouse containing a profusion of creepers, carnivorous plants, orchids and succulents put the stamp on his professional career. Caudiciform plants quickly became his favourites when, in 1974, he discovered his first Kedrostis africana. During a geography course on the Cape of Good Hope, he began to dream
about that country: a dream that was to become reahty when, in 1980 and again in 1981, he visited South Africa. Here he encountered some well-known people (Bruce Bayer, Cynthia Giddy, John Winter ) not to mention the flora, which he had known nothing about until then. This was a true revelation for a young man with a diploma in horticulture. After South Africa, he travelled to numerous other countries (the Canary Isles, Guadeloupe, Tahiti, Réunion, Santo Domingo, Madeira) but his passion is for desert lands with their abundance of succulent plants.
Although he is not a professional botanist, he quickly became familiar with the names of the plants he loved.
People like Marcel Lecoufle, Marcel Kroenlein and John La-vranos gave him a lot of help in developing his career.
After many years, his dream of visiting Socotra came true in October 2003.
