The philosophy that gave birth to the 'New Art' in turn of the century Europe had a pronounced effect on sculpture. Working mainly in Paris, Art Nouveau sculptors found a new freedom of expression which enabled them to produce works untrameMed by restrictions on style or subject matter. By the 1890s sculptors had fully embraced the new aesthetic, and began to apply it to a variety of objects. Chimney-mantel garnitures, ashtrays, centrepieces, firedogs and lamps were invested with typical Art Nouveau themes. The flowing lines of insects and flowers, and above all of ethereal women, turned functional objects into sensuous pieces. This fully illustrated and informative study by Alastair Duncan contains the work of over seventy Art Nouveau sculptors, deluding Carabin, Larche, Gurschner and Korschann.
