PENGUIN MODERN CLASSICS BRAVE NEW WORLD Born in 1894, Aldous Huxley belonged to a family of great talent: he was the grandson of the famous Thomas Henry Huxley; the son of Leonard Huxley, the editor of the Cornhill Magaziné; and the brother of Sir Julián Huxley. He was educated at Eton and Balliol, and before devoting himself entirely to his own writing worked as a journalist and dramatic critic. Aldous Huxley first attracted attention with a volume of stories called Limbo (1920) and followed this up with his növel Crome Yellow (1921). Antic Hay and Those Barren Leaves followed in 1923 and 1925 respectively. His three most outstanding novels are Point Counter Poini (1928), Brave New World (1932), and Eyeless in Gaia (1936). His travel books include Jestin Pilate (1926) and Beyond the Mexique Bay (1934). Grey Eminence and TheDevils of Loudun arehistorical studies, and in The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell he discusses the nature and significance of visionary experience. His last books were Brave New World Revisited (1959), Collected Essays (1960), On Art atid Artists (1961), Island (1962), and Literature and Science (1963). He died in 1963. Vissza

This fantasy of the future is one of Aldous Huxley's best-known books. Its impact on the modern world has been considerable. Abandoning his mordant criticism of modern men and morals, the author switches to the future and shows us life as he conceives it may be somé hundreds of years hence. Written in the thirties when - whatever the immediate outlook may have been - people believed that ultimately all would be for the best in the best of all possible worlds, this növel is a warning against such optimism. With irrepressible wit and raillery, Huxley satirizes the idea of progress put forward by the scientists and philosophers; and his world of testtűbe babies and 'feelies' is uncomfortably closer now than it was when the book was first published.
