This is a handbook on radio and recording techniques but the principles described are equally applicable to film and television sound. It des-cribes how the highest standards may be achieved not only in the elaborately equipped studio but alsó with simple equipment out on location.
The field that lies between the originál creative idea and the elec-trical signal on its way to recording head or transmitter is large; and in it there are few rules-of-thumb. The final judgment must be by ear. This book telis the reader what to listen for when piacing microphones, controlling relatíve sound levels, mixing, creating sound effects, and so on. There is a chapter on radiophonics and its parent techniques in electronic music and musique concréte, and another on communication in sound dealing with such vitai subjects as pace and intelligibility in an ephemeral médium.

The skills and operational techniques are mostly simple, but work-ing in sound is primarily a matter of judgment and personal taste. This is therefore no more a technical book (in the engineering sense) than it is a book on the art of radio. Instead it deals with the crafts-manship of sound, the art which conceals art, to produce the bold coníident line of a professional sounding job.
Alec Nisbett joined the BBC as a Studio Manager and was co-producer of a speciálist programme "Sound". Since then he has pro-duced radio features and magaziné programmes for the BBC North American Service and is now a film and television outside broadcast director. He believes that the content of a programme must never be subservient to technique—but that good operational techniques fill an indispensable supporting rőle in the best programmes.
"He has assembled a volume that could easily qualify as a handbook for both students and professionals alike."—Television Age (U.S.).
"This book is intended not only for those who are directly concerned with putting sound programmes together but alsó for the writer, director, actor, musician, inter-viewer, contributor oftaped actuality, engineer, or anyone else in any of the many fields which come together in the sound studio.
The small film producer, newsreel cameraman shooting in sound, and the in-plant film worker especially will find this book of value because for the first time, perhaps, it describes in detail all the procedures necessary to recording sound of professional quality on tape or film."—American Cinematographer.
"This authoritative book avoids unnecessary scientific and technological phrase-ology and is written in an easy style which keeps the reader interested—thefacts are digested effortlessly. It will appeal to professionals and amateurs alike."—Practical Wireless. Vissza
