American
Literature
A Representative Anthology of American
Writing from Colonial Times to the Present
selected and introduced by
Geoffrey Moore
This big, generous, comprehensive an-
thology is designed to make available to
English readers a selection of the best
American writing since colonial times.
Maximum emphasis has been placed on
the twentieth century; there are sub-
stantial extracts from novelists and
short story writers—Willa Gather,
Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner,
Thomas Wolfe and John Steinbeck,
Sherwood Anderson, Ring Lardner and
Katherine Anne Porter, and from poets
—Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, Robert
Frost, Wallace Stevens, E. E. Gum-
mings, William Carlos Williams, Hart
Crane and John Crowe Ransom. But
the 'classic' American authors of the
nineteenth century (Cooper, Haw-
thorne, Poe, Melville, Whitman, Twain
and James), together with the realists

the 'classic' American authors of the
nineteenth century (Cooper, Haw-
thorne, Poe, Melville, Whitman, Twain
and James), together with the realists
and naturalists of the period from the
Civil War to the First World War, are
almost as fully represented. In addition,
the editor has included those colonial
American writers, from William Brad-
ford to Philip Freneau, who are im-
portant to an understanding of the full
growth of American literature.
Geoffrey Moore, who has recently
been appointed to the new Chair of
American Literature at the University
of Hull, is already well known as the
editor of the highly praised Penguin Book
of Modern American Verse.
. . The selection . . . manages to be
representative without being crashingly
obvious; current fashions are duly
noted without being followed slavishly.
The biographical notes are lively and
informative, and each of the book's
three sections—Colonial, Nineteenth
Century, Modern—is introduced by a
long, judicious essay, which is intended
to give newcomers their bearings with-
out talking down to them a useful
and stimulating collection. . . .' john
