Beauty, they say, is in the eye ofthe beholder, and one of the pleasures of looking at the work of agifted photographer is being able to see what the photographer sees, even when a subject is not beautiful in the classic sense. As an artist, Evelyn Lauder enables us to see beauty in all her subjects- beneath the surface, in a detail others might overlook, in a composition that focuses our attention on what shefinds special in a particular scene. In her first book of photographs, The Seasons Observed, Evelyn Lauder presented a selection of images that captured the natural beauty of different parts of the world during the cycle of the seasons. As the book progresses, we begin to sense a humán presence in the landscape-in an abandoned dock, a beached boát, a garden maze-and ultimately thefigures of people in their own settings. AIthough the humán impact on nature is increasingly evident, the photographer allows us to see beauty in man-made objects as weil as in untouched natural settings. Weil known as a cosmetics executive at her family's company and as a philanthropist, Evelyn Lauder is thefounder of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. She is alsó a serious photographer. As Amy Spindler, Style Editor for the New York Times, notes in her introduction to this book, Evelyn Lauders "embrace oj life, her vast understanding of art, her curiosity about the world at large, and her ability to isolate the beauty in any situation are the informing principles of her photography."
