The book aims at teaching proficiency in the educated colloquial of Cairo as a language in itself, Cairene colloquial is recorded, described, and translated as material for instruction. The result is a new and interesting presentation, not only for beginners but perhaps also for more mature students of Arabic.
The material both in the Grammar and in the Texts is 'live' and of real use to the average European in the situations in vv^hich he may expect to speak Arabic in Egypt or elsewhere in the Arab world.
The book is naturally best used with the aid of a teacher, preferably an Egyptian, but attention has been paid to the needs of the self-taught. An introduction covers the important features of pronunciation, a key is provided to exercises, English translations face the Arabic text, and the Vocabulary is given in both ways.
The author is Lecturer in Linguistics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University.
