Six years ago a special double number of ART and Australia (Vol. 14 Nos. 3 & 4) was devoted to the collection of the Australian National Gallery. At that time the Gallery project was under savage attack from the media, which headlined the relatively few expensive purchases that had been made, generating the idea of irresponsibility and extravagance, while ignoring the rest of the collection which was being formed.
The special issue gave the Gallery the opportunity to show the full extent of what had already been collected, as well as presenting the guidelines for future collecting.
Since that time, the collection has evolved considerably, and it is fitting that a further special issue of ART and Australia (Vol. 20 No. 1) should now review the achievements of the intervening years as well as provide an overview of the collection presented to the public after the Gallery's opening by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on October 12, 1982.
