This study by David Clarke is now well established as a pioneer work on archaeological methodology, the theoretical basis of ail archaeological analysis whatever the period or area. The first edition of the book presented and evaluated the radical changes in methodology which derived from developments in other disciplines, such as cybernetics, computer science and geography, during the 1950s and 1960s. Dr Clarke argued that archaeology was a coherent discipline with its own methods and procedures. Archaeologists already used similar models based upon similar entities (attributes, artefacts, types, assemblages, cultures and culture groups) and it was now essential that a well-defined central theory tae developed. He attempted to define these entities rigorously and consistently so that they could be applied to archaeological data and he suggested a range of social and linguistic entities to which they might be related.
This new edition presents the same general theory of archaeology, which is unparalleled in its scope and depth of presentation. New material and illustrations have been integrated into the text to bring the book up to date. As a whole the book has been cut to three-quarters of its former length so that it is more readily accessible to the reader and does not duplicate more recent research into the rapidly developing fields of statistical and computer techniques and spatial analysis using the concepts and methods of contemporary geography. Notes have been added to help the reader understand the advances in both method and theory which Analytical Archaeology helped to propel. The book remains a source of stimulus to the student and professional archaeologist and is a classic statement of an influential view of archaeological theory.
Dr Gierke was Director of Studies in Archaeology and Anthropology at Peterhouse, Cambridge, and a University Lecturer in the Faculty of Archaeoiogy and Anthropology; Dr Chapman is Lecturer in Archaeoiogy at the University of Reading. Vissza
