About the series-
The Making of the Past
The Making of the Past is a series designed to provide a complete survey of the early history of the world as revealed by archaeology and related disciplines. Its subject is a new history, the making of a new past, freshly uncovered and reconstructed in recent years by skilled specialists. Beautifully illustrated with photographs, many in full colour, and with maps, diagrams and line drawings including reconstructions, the series is completely authoritative and up to date, while losing nothing of the excitement of recent discoveries about the ancient past.

To most of us in the West, ancient Japan is an unknown quantity. The author of this book, born an American, has the advantage of knowing Japan intimately from within and the experience of 20 years as a practising archaeologist and professor' at a Japanese university. After an introduction on the history of archaeology in Japan, he devotes a chapter to the prehistoric period, the origins of the Japanese and the first potters. Chapter 3 is mainly concerned with mythology and early religious practices. Subsequent chapters discuss the growth of Buddhism to the seventh century AD, the establishment of the capital at Heijo in the eighth century, and the Heian period ending in the twelfth century. Four visual stories ¦ portray in pictures Shinto shrines and ritual, the prehistoric Middle Jomon subculture, early horse-riding nobles of the sixth century AD, and the remains of the early capital Asuka (abandoned at the end of the seventh century AD). The book is illustrated throughout with numerous photographs (most of them in colour), maps and diagrams. Vissza
