This series on the lives and works of the great painters provides an invaluable guide. In each volume a short introduction gives a brief biography of the artist and explains the elements of his or her painting style. 50 paintings are faithfully reproduced in full colour, and an extended caption to each clearly explains the background to the work, its significance in the history of art, and its position in the complete canon of the artist's work.
Clarence Jones, after an English education, lived in Italy and Spain and became interested in 19th and 20th century European art through his friendship with the English painter John Duguid, who was an admirer of Constable and Cézanne. JOSEPH TURNER is now recognized as a landcape painter of^oetic genius: his treatment of atmosphere, light and colour has a mystical quality that is quite unique. Turner was a tremendously prolific artist. Reproduced here are 50 representative works from his thousands of sketches, watercolours and oils, including his masterpiece Venice: San Giorgio Maggiore, with its sense of infinity of sea and sky, and the wonderful luminosity of the atmosphere; Nbrham Castle: Sunrise, where the whole scen^ is dissolved in a finely coloured shimmering mist; and The Fighting Temeraire which reveals his fascination with the visual effects of fire and water.
