HUNGARIAN PLAYS
Since the events of 1989, Hungary has undergone her own version of the 'velvet revolution' that has swept Eastern Europe. This volume presents a pioneering selection of up-to-the-minute plays from the vibrant but little-known theatre of present-day Hungary. ^^mRYWOMAN by Péter Kárpáti is a modern retelling of the medieval Everyman story, with a female protagonist. THE SEDUCER'S DIARY by András Nagy is loosely based on autobiographical writings by the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard. Offering a metaphor for modern Hungary, MÜLLER'S DANCERS by Ákos Németh shows a dance troupe falling apart when their leader deserts them. And in Andor Szilágyi's lightly surreal UNSENT LETTERS two people repeatedly meet, fall in love and part.
In these four plays, selected and introduced by the Literary Manager of one of Budapest's two National Theatres, can be seen again the sense of energy and adventure which has long been a characteristic of Hungary and Hungarians - particularly in... Tovább
