B ased on the story of the man who, having pulled a painful thorn from a lion's foot, is rewarded for his brave action when he faces the lions in the Roman arena.
Light-hearted, witty and often sparkling with gaiety, the comedy is nevertheless a shrewd reassessment of both Christianity and persecution. The martyrs in Shaw's play are not stoic saints; they are ordinary people with personal
inclinations but united 'in a common opposition to the official religion'. The 'official religion', in turn, is merely the established law and order, upheld by what Shaw calls the 'Have-and-Holders', who feel threatened by anyone who does not behave as other people do.
Controversial questions are also raised by Shaw in his Preface, where, without condemning Christianity, he throws a characteristically Shavian slant on accepted customs and attitudes.
