Without the Thames, London in its present form would not exist. Its tidal ebb and flow were of such importance to early navigation that until the closure of the docks in the ig6os London was essentially a maritime city. In the first century the Romans realised the potential of the natural harbour at the Pool of London when they established the first permanent wharves and quays.
Throughout the centuries that followed the Thames was London's main thoroughfare, and consequently many famous landmarks line its banks. Greenwich Hospital, the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament, Somerset House and Chelsea Hospital all present their most imposing aspect to the river.
London from the Thames takes the reader on an enticing boat trip from the Thames Barrier in the east to Hampton Court in the west, exploring this historic river and the buildings and monument on its banks. With a foreground of rippling, reflective water, and seen against a wide expanse of sky, all of these buildings appear to their best advantage from the river, and Angelo Hornak's stunning photographs, taken from his small boat, offer a unique perspective.
Besides the grand public monuments, the book features less well-known buildings: picturesque houseboats at Chelsea, atmospheric pubs in Wapping, Victorian warehouses and modern office blocks in the City, as well as scenes of river life: children paddling at Richmond, bungee-jumping at Chelsea Bridge and anglers at Teddington.
The photographs are complemented by engravings that illustrate scenes and buildings that have long since disappeared from the Thames, including a public execution at Tower Hill, Henry VII's favourite palace at Richmond, and Old London Bridge crowded with shops and houses. The entertaining text tells the history of the Thames, with the help of lively anecdotes and intriguing facts about the places and people associated with the river.
London from the Thames is a fascinating survey of the capital's river, published to coincide with the central role of the Thames in the Millennium celebrations.
^^fter studying architectural history at ^F^k Oxford University, Angelo Hornak took up architectural photography and for the last twenty-five years this has been his profession. Besides running a large library of architectural images, he has illustrated and contributed to many books, including histories of Canterbury Cathedral, York Minster, St Paul's Cathedral, Durham Cathedral, Brighton Pavilion, The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and Somerset House. His own book, Balloon Over Britain, was published in iggi, in association with the National Trust. He lives in North London. Vissza
