Tranquil lakes reflecting the deep blue above have given Minnesota its soubriquet "land of the sky-blue waters". The thousands of lakes and waterways that thread the landscape cover an area of more than 5,000 square miles and provide somé of the most beautiful and evocative images of this peaceful state. They alsó played a vitai role in its history, providing routes by which Sioux and Chippewa Indians, solitary trappers and intrepid explorers traveled the wilderness.
Wide prairielands in the south and west of the state were cultivated by determined pioneer settlers who followed the explorers, eventually supplying a thriving flour milling industry. The great, iron-rich Mesabi Rangé in the northeast once accounted for over half the world's production of the metál, while the state's vast forests fuelled the devastating lumbering industry out of which the legend of Paul Bunyan was born.
