This booklet provides a brief survey of the history of elementary reading instruction in Hungary, from the foundation of the first school in 996 until nowadays. It concentrates on the reading methods and contains scanned pages from the most influential ABC books of the past. Present day reading programs are also included. The archive material is mostly from the State Pedagogical Library and Museum. The author, Anna Adamik-Jászó, is professor of linguistics at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. She is interested in the history of reading instruction and in the research on language awareness and she has developed a language and literacy program for the first eight grades.
