Margit Anna (1913-1991) was an outstanding figure of 20th century Hungarian painting. To date, however, no book has considered her whole career, with its many artistic, biographical, and historical facets. Anna cannot justly be called an unknown or disregarded representative of Hungarian art, yet what the public knows about her work is rather onesided. The present volume is the first to present her rich and versatile oeu-vre in its totality, setting her different artistic periods within both the Hungarian and the international context. HedvigTurai, Ph.D. art historian, gives particular emphasis to the question of the artist's identity, especially to two of its dimensions, Anna's Jewish roots and her gender. The author follows the long, difficult process of how she worked through and came to present ever more explicitly and powerfully the grievous loss of her husband, the painter Imre Amos, and the historical trauma of the Holocaust. Anna thus confronted the topic of Jewlshness and the historical legacy of the Jews in Hungary in the late 1950s and early 1960s, an era when this was almost a taboo topic. A separate chapter of the book investigates the connection of the artist's works and her gender. Tural challenges gendered stereotypes and myths about Margit Anna, such as the often-advanced view that Anna's work was merely derivative from and inferior to that of her husband Amos. The author persuasively portrays Anna as Amos's equal. Throwing a new light on the facts of her private life, her intimate relationships, and her public persona and self-representation, the author reevaluates Margit Anna's position In Hungarian art history, clearing the way to a more nuanced and unprejudiced appreciation of her work as a whole.
The book Is accompanied by 155 Illustrations, mostly in colour, many of which are reproduced here for the first time. It Is written In an accessible style and will Interest both professionals and the general public. Vissza
