John has hunted wild boar in India and fished in over 60 countries around the world, but his first love is East Anglia where he lives west of Norwich in a Lakeland setting with his ever-patient wife Jo, two budgies, two lovebirds, Cheecko, an African grey parrot, and three dogs. One of their two lakes he first designed as a mixed Lakeland fishery on paper, with islands and promontory-features etc, before arranging its excavation and subsequent landscaping. Over 30 years an angling writer, John contributes to several ^^sy fishing titles, both at home and abroad, plus Angling Times, and is one of the countries leading 'angling photographers'. His collection of over 100,000 colour transparencies, depicting fishing all over the world is one of the largest in Britain. He pens (and has done for 10 years) a weekly column in the Sunday Express, and escorts parties of anglers abroad to exotic locations all over Africa and North America. As a result of this, during 2003 John directed and presented 12 international 'Fishing Safari' TV programmes for Discovery Network Europe, based upon his book 'John Wilson's Greatest Fishing Adventures', which included the capture of his lai^est ever freshwater fish, a 3001bs giant white sturgeon from Canada's mighty Fraser River in the province of British Columbia. This series is now available on DVD under the Green Umbrella label. John is president of the 'Perch Fishers'.
He was given the Angling Times 'Conservation Award' in April of 1986, and was voted by Sky Sports viewers, the male angling personality, and specimen angler of the year in the 1998-9 season. Among the numerous charity organisations to which John contributes, are 'Get Hooked on Fishing', 'The Willow Foundation', 'Make a Wish Foundation', 'Fighting Chance', 'Junior Coarse Angling UK', of which John is a patron, 'Save the Children', and the 'Marie Curie Cancer Care', John also spends his spare time lecturing at various colleges. In 1994 John made an hour-long complimentary video for the Yoga for Health foundation at Ikwellbury near Biggleswade on behalf of his old angling friend Colin Crow who suffered, and still does from MS.
John has two children, 33-year-old Lisa, and 35-year-old Lee, who joined dad on two of his Safari programmes filmed shark fishing in Namibia. He also has two young granddaughters. Lana and Alisha. 10-year-old Alisha loves fishing. Vissza
