This TASCHEN edition also includes his brilliant collection of 32 chromolithographs illustrating the people and costumes of the Nile Valley, which he published as the Oriental Album {OrientalAlbum: Characters. Costumes, and MoJesofLife. the Valley of the Nile. London, 1848).
Prisse wrote later: "Wc shall discuss all the arts, all the industries cultivated by Orientals with so much taste, brilliancc, and fantas)-. Wc will present splendid reproductions of the monuments, objects of art and luxury, which pro\'idc evidence of an ad\'anccd civilization, the influence of which has been felt even in Europe."

Émilc Prisse dAvennes (1807-1879), ein französischer Orientalist, Schriftsteller und Künstler, war einer der bedeutendsten Ä^rptologcn des 19. Jahrhunderts. Als glühender Verehrer ägyptischer und orientalischer Kunstfertigkeit nahm ihn die arabische Kunst in den Bann. Bereits alsjugendlieber harte Prisse davon geträumt, den Orient zu erkunden, und mit 19 Jahren brach er zu einer Reise nach Griechenland, Indien und Paläsrina auf. Während der nächsten 40 Jalire erforschte er Syrien, Arabien und Persicn und lebte in Ägypten und Algerien. Zum Islam übergetreten, reiste Prisse als Araber verkleidet unter dem Namen Idris Effcndi durch Ägypten. Fasziniert von der Symmetrie, Komplexität und Fülle ägyptischer und arabischer Kunst, stellte er aus seiner umfassenden Sammlung die besten Beispiele zu Kunst und Architektur zusammen, in denen der jeweilige historische, soziale und religiöse Kontext ebeitfalls berücksichtigt wurde.
