Silouan was an unlettered young peasant from the heart of European Russia. He finished his military service in the autumn of 1892 and within a week set off for the Russian Monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mt. Athos. There, rooted in a tradition reaching back to the very beginnings of Christian monasticism, he came to a personal experience of Christianity akin to that of the Desert Fathers.
in this account of Silouan's life, personality and teaching, by his disciple Archimandrite Sophrony, we witness the spiritual struggles which made Silouan truly a "Staretz" or "Elder": a monk whose God-given wisdom and insight enable him to serve as a spiritual guide to others. Other books on Orthodox spirituality from St. Vladimir's Seminary Press include St. Gregory Palamas and Orttiodox Spirituality by Fr. John Meyendorff, St. Sergius and Russian Spirituality by Pierre Kovalevsky, and Russian Piety by Nicholas Arseniev. All three provide fresh insights into the rich religious tradition in which Staretz Silouan lived and wrote and prayed.
