James Coates has been an investigative reporter for the Chicago Tribune since 1967. A two-time winner of the Raymond Clapper Award for journalism, Coates has covered such major stories as the Alan Berg assassination and the raid on the Branch Davidians compound in Waco, Texas. He is the author of In Mormon Circles: Jack Mormons, Gentiles and Latter Day Saints and the co-author with Michael Kilian of Heavy Losses: The Dangerous Decline of American Defense.
