Frederick Wilkinson, aschool-teacherby profession, first became interested in arms and armour in the course of his history studies. He is the author of a number of books and articles on the subject, among them a book on handguns published earlier in this series, and he has also lectured extensively on the history and collecting of all branches of arms and armour. Mr Wilkinson has been honorary secretary of the Arms and Armour Society for several years.
This is the story of edged weapons and personal armour from pre-history to World War II. The interaction of weapon and armour development, the gradual specialization of the sword, the role of the bayonet, and the triumphant flowering of the armourer's skill in the 15th and 16th centuries are discussed in a lavishly illustrated text. Although the focus is on European arms and armour, sections dealing with Africa, America, and Asia offer a useful comparison with the European tradition.
