In 131 magnificent photographs -all new, ail in fuii coior-the imperiai treasures of Vienna's great Art History IVIuseum.
Ihe sculptural elegance of the Kunsthistorisches -Vienna's renowned Art History Museum-is a noble frame for the Imperial art treasures housed within: the masterpieces from the private collections of Austria's emperors, connoisseurs who assembled great works of art from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century.
In this book, with the director of the Museum's Picture Gallery as guide through its pages, the Museum's paintings are brought to life. One sees, as if on a private tour, works reflecting the scope of the personal tastes of Austria's rulers—from the riotous peasant scenes of Bruegel, obtained by the Archduke Ernest from the city of Antwerp, and the intense and solitary religious works of Mantegna, originally acquired by the Archduke Leopold William, to the dazzlingly clear colors of Dürer and the refined sensuality of Giorgione.
Here we find the entire range of European art.
From Germany, for example, we see one of the most extensive collections of Albrecht Diirer's masterpieces, including his unusual and symbolic Adoration of the Trinity, with its Renaissance clarity and rigor; the sinister Judith with the Head of Holofernes of Lucas Cranach the Elder; the splendidly meticulous portraits of Hans Holbein.
From Italy: the metaphysical landscape of Cosmé Tura's superb Pieta, original in its use of atonal and resonant colors; Andrea Mantegna's intense and richly developed St. Sebastian; the psychologically mysterious Three Philosophers by Giorgione, with its luminous gradations of color; the magic impressionism of Titian's Diana and CalHsto.
From Holland, Spain, France and Switzerland

we see some of the world's greatest masterworks, including Rembrandt's matchless personal studies, an expressive series of royal portraits by Velázquez, and the bold impressionism of Camilla Corot, Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir.
And, as the crowning grace tathis outstanding collection, the most glorious profusion of Flemish painting ever assembled under one roof: van der Weyden's Madonna and Child; Hans Memling's dreamlil(e Tryptich, with its richly ornamented perspectives; the touchingly awltward Adam and Eve of van der Goes' Original Sin; Bruegel's awe-inspiring Tower of Babel, shown in a magnificent double spread; and the monumentally opulent feminine forms of Peter Paul Rubens' Cimone and
Efigenia, full of vitality and sensual fire
