The Urban Pattern has been acclaimed as the classic text on planning since it was first published in 1950; in three previous editions it has inspired and motivated many thousands of students and professionals. The fourth edition has been substantially revised and enlarged to reflect the mechanics of professional practice and to encompass the increasingly complex and comprehensive nature of modern planning.
The authors emphasize the major subject of current concern: growth management, environmental impact, housing for the elderly, policy planning, advocacy planning, and implementation. Additional material on new towns, urban design, historical preservation, alternative transportation methods, commercial areas, and regional planning, both in the United States and abroad, considerably broadens the scope of the book. Noteworthy discussions from prior editions of the historical development of urbanization from ancient times to the present have been retained and updated.
Planning alone, as the authors recognize, cannot solve all the ills of the urban community or conserve our natural resources. Without it, however, we cannot begin to achieve the environment we aspire to. The Urban Pattern is an essential handbook for students and professionals in planning and related fields.
The late Arthur B. Gallion was a pioneer in the field of urban planning. He has been associated with several government agencies in Los Angeles and has held academic positions at the University of Southern California, the University of California at Los Angeles, Harvard University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
