The correct classification of operable
tumors still forms the scientific basis
of the neurosurgery clinic. The post-
operative prognosis, often even the
outcome of the operation, each com-
parison of the different methods of
treatment — surgery, radiation — and
each statistical comparison is based
upon a true classification. However,
there are still classification schemes in
?fee throughout the world which are,
terminologically, quite different (mo-
difications of Bailey-Cushing, Ker-
nohan, del RlO hortega, etc.). The
International Union Against Cancer
has attempted to produce a classifica-
tion with synonyms in order to elimi-
nate the "verbal confusion" which
exists in this situation. However, each
type of tumor was represented by only
one illustration (Springer-Verlag, Illu-
strated Tumor Nomenclature, 2nd re-
vised edition 1969). This work re-

This atlas shows the growth pattern
of the intracranial tumors, their fre-
quent variations and the typical
changes occurring as a result of re-
gressive changes. Therefore, it is a
guide to the art of making a correct
classification. There is also a dis-
cussion concerning the prognosis
based on "genuine growth" in which
Kernohan's grading system is fur-
ther developed and adapted for daily
use. It is hoped that this atlas forms a
solid basis for the morphological
diagnosis of brain tumors. The brief
text is given in six languages in order
to make it intelligable throughout the
world. Vissza
